The obscene power of the middle finger

After M.I.A. shocked at the Super Bowl, Adele flips off the host of the Brit Awards. Let the phony outrage begin

The middle finger is making a comeback. I know what you’re thinking. Who knew it ever went away?

But the bird — specifically the flipping of it — has managed to make worldwide headlines twice now in the past month. First, there was M.I.A.’s apparently unscheduled additional choreography during her appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show, a move that occasional finger-giver Madonna “wasn’t happy about.” M.I.A.’s off-book version of double dream hands swiftly proved the power of a gesture to shock, as NBC – the same network that features “penis cleavage” gags on “Are You There, Chelsea?” — hastily issued an apology and lamented that “Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture.” The NFL similarly decreed that “The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing and we apologize to our fans.”

Reefer madness

Middle-school anti-drug campaigns have barely changed in decades. Are they too lame to work with today's preteens?

It’s a middle-school rite of passage. One day, you’re sitting in class learning about Alexander the Great and wondering how to grab the optimum real estate in the lunchroom. The next, you’re getting the drug and alcohol awareness lesson. For my 12-year-old, that day just arrived. “We saw a movie in school today,” she drawled over dinner recently, eyes already engaged in full eye roll. “It was called ‘Pot, the Party Crasher.’” Then she made a familiar sputtering sound of contempt.

The painful, pathetic Chris Brown and Rihanna collaboration

A nauseating pair of remixes is a cynical train wreck for two pop stars with a history of domestic violence

Few things in life live up to expectations. But when rumors started flying after the Grammys that Chris Brown and Rihanna were collaborating, the collective shudder of revulsion seemed to indicate that the result would be a truly unholy mingling. On Monday, the two debuted guest spots on the remixes of their new singles: Brown’s “Turn Up the Music” and Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake.” And by God, nightmare it is.

Brown and Rihanna are no strangers, of course. Brown is still serving his five-year probation stemming from a 2009 felony plea after an altercation with Rihanna. Back then, the haunting image of Rihanna’s bruised and swollen face was splashed all over the Internet; Brown laid low until the inevitable, damage-controlling Larry King interview several months later.

Now what? Life after cancer treatment

I'm readying to end a protocol that saved my life -- so why am I so scared?

Of all the possible outcomes one could have after a diagnosis of metastatic, Stage 4 cancer, I have had the best. Last month, my doctor told me the tumors in my lungs and under the flesh of my back — after months of treatment in an experimental, Phase I clinical trial — had disappeared. And now, having endured surgeries and side effects and weekly monitoring, I can, with my last regular treatment mere weeks away, begin preparing for the rest of my life. Yet when my friends ask what we’re doing to celebrate, when they high-five me and ask, hopefully, “So now it’s over, right?” I don’t know what to tell them. I don’t know how to explain why I don’t feel yet like partying.

Where’s Stephen? On Wednesday, fans eager to attend a taping of “The Colbert Report” were shocked to learn the show had been abruptly canceled. The situation turned to one of mass withdrawal symptoms Thursday as the show still didn’t return; Comedy Central issued a terse announcement that the show was shut down due to “unforeseen circumstances.” It was the first time in the show’s seven-year history that it’s had to cancel taping.

When sexy ads cross the line

An airline uses its sexy stewardesses as a selling point, and flies decades back in time

Bring on the sexy stews! On second thought, let’s not.

This week, the British Advertising Standards Authority yanked an ad campaign for discount airline Ryanair that featured lingerie-clad flight attendants and promised “Red Hot Fares & Crew.” The ads, which the ASA deemed “sexist” and “demeaning,” were inspired by Ryanair’s popular charity calendar, which features sexy stewardesses vamping around in swimsuits and provocatively demonstrating how to inflate a life vest. Somehow, it was funnier when Julie Hagerty did it in “Airplane!”
